| AUGUST GREEN TIP | Use a rain barrel to water your plants, lawn and garden. Simply place a large bin or barrel under your rain gutter downspout to collect water. You will reduce the amount of storm water that runs off of your property into overburdened sewer systems. You will also save money on your water bill! |
| SEPTEMBER GREEN TIP | Americans are spending more time than ever watching TV, averaging five hours a day! The result is a surge in electricity use by TVs, which can draw more power in a year than some refrigerators. This is especially true for the new flat screen TVs with liquid crystal display and liquid plasma technology. They use significantly more power and in fact are becoming one of the biggest power hogs of the 25 consumer electronic products in every household. Watch an hour less TV every day and watch your electricity bill come down! |
| OCTOBER GREEN TIP | Make the switch to recycled toilet paper! All grocery stores carry it these days and it's much softer than it used to be! Every ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 4,000 kilowatts of electricity, 3 cubic yards of landfill and 7,000 gallons of water. Unfortunately, recycled toilet paper makes up only a 2 percent share of the American market—much of the rest is made from plantation-grown or native forest trees. Try to buy environmentally friendly toilet paper that is unbleached, chlorine-free and, if possible, 100 percent recycled. |
