COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Dear Parents,

 Welcome to the 2009-10 school year! As Leewood’s counselor, I will be providing information to you through the Counselor’s Corner.

 The Student Services department of the Miami-Dade County Public School System requests that each school site develop a comprehensive guidance program that involves counselors, teachers, and parents in supporting the development of our children from an academic, social/personal, and career awareness perspective. Our school site plan, at Leewood, provides students with guidance class activities, small group counseling, and individual counseling. The guidance class and small group counseling activities, throughout the year, will include: 

• The development of social/personal skills and conflict resolution skills.
• The development of organizational skills, time management, study skills, problem solving skills, and self-esteem leading to academic success.
• The development of decision-making skills.
• The awareness of future careers related to the talents and interests of students.

Red Ribbon anti-drug messages, Character Education Awareness, and Career Awareness, will be presented to students through school wide programs.  These programs will further reinforce social/personal skills, academic development, and decision-making skills of our children.

I will be providing information to parents, throughout the year, on supporting children’s development. 

Finally, I would like to convey information that comes from the Student Services Department on the topic Suggestions for Parents To Assist Children With Their Plans For The Future. 

• Take your son/daughter to work and/or let them go to work with a relative such as Grandmother or Grandfather.
• Talk to your child about your job.
• Volunteer to speak to your child’s grade level during career speaker’s day.
• Help your child identify their strengths and interests.
• Take your child to the library and occasionally read with them.
• Encourage your child to set age appropriate goals.
